Preamble to the United States Constitution

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Summary

The preamble was likely authored by Gouverneur Morris and is the only part of the Constitution that does not explain how the new government worked. Instead, it stated why the Constitution and the new government were created. All the ideas listed in the preamble are the reasons for it being created. It is the most famous part of the Constitution, particularly the first three words, "We the People".
